In 2026, SPU is required by the EPA to test the drinking water in a minimum of 120 homes connected to our water system. This testing is focused on homes built prior to 1983 because there is a greater likelihood of lead being present due to older soldering materials or corrosion from plumbing components, such as water softeners.
These tests are done at no cost to our customers and the results will be shared directly with the participating customer. The data from these tests is strictly informational. If anything is detected customers are not required by SPU or the EPA to take action or replace any plumbing in the home – unless the customer chooses to do so for personal reasons.
The number of drinking water tests required has increased recently due in part to Shakopee’s growth and the addition of a new well on our water system. (A new well was drilled in 2025 in the Windermere neighborhood west of County Road 15/Marystown Rd.) Although the well has not been put into service yet, the EPA requires increased testing whenever a new well is added to a utility’s system.
The water sampling tests are easy to complete. Preparation takes only a few minutes and then the sample is left overnight. SPU will drop off and pick up the test kits.
Water sampling will be conducted in April and September in 2026.
Contact the SPU Water Department at 952-233-1503 to schedule a test or to ask any questions about this testing.
